ISMS Network & Service Assurance for Communication Service Providers - Sept 13, 12 pm ET

4G LTE networks are expected to provide a comprehensive and secure IP-based mobile broadband solution to laptop computers, smartphones, and other intelligent mobile devices. Early 4G deployments have shown that management is not only more complex, but 4G does not solve many of the issues that are inherent to 3G wireless networks. View this webcast to learn how several carriers are tackling these issues.

Today's Top Stories

1. Verizon appoints Lowell McAdam as CEO, with Seidenberg keeping the chairman post

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | < a href="http://links.mkt1985.com/ctt?kn=191&ms=MzU2MjA4OAS2&r=MjM2NzI3MjAzMjcS1&b=0&j=MTEyMTk3ODczS0&mt=1&rt=0" name="api_addthis_com_oexchange_Iovvzq0VyhlTptqE6s13Yg" >Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Verizon (NYSE: VZ), as expected, has appointed Lowell McAdam as its new president and CEO, while Ivan Seidenberg will remain company chairman. McAdam has served as Verizon's president and COO since last September.

Lowell McAdam, Verizon

Lowell McAdam will take the reins as Verizon CEO on Aug. 1.

Set to start in his new role in Aug. 1, the appointment is part of the ongoing transition to hand the torch to McAdam who is in line to take over the company when Seidenberg retires later this year.

As President and now CEO of Verizon Communications, McAdam will oversee all of Verizon's wireless and wireline operations and functions.

Among McAdam's many challenges will be staying innovative on the wireless side as a potential new superpower looms in the combined AT&T (NYSE: T)/T-Mobile, as well as finding ways to offset ongoing losses in Verizon's traditional PSTN-based phone business with Fiber to the Premise-based FiOS and cloud services.

To advance the wireline side of Verizon, McAdam is going to adopt the same "entrepreneurial culture" he helped establish as president of Verizon Wireless.

"We will definitely try to bring that entrepreneurial culture from the wireless side into the wireline side," McAdam told Bloomberg.

While iPhone and LTE device sales were a big part of Verizon's Q2 earnings, the wireline side reported gains with its FTTP-based FiOS and in the business segment the acquisition of cloud computing provider Terremark.

2. Telcos help Formula One racing stay ahead of the pack

By Samantha Bookman Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Rules changes plus the global nature of the sport have made Formula One racing increasingly dependent on telecommunications services to compete, a New York Times article says.

Carriers like AT&T (NYSE: T), Telmex (NYSE: TMX) and Vodafone (LSE:  VOD.L) are both sponsoring teams and providing technology solutions such as videoconferencing to work around cost-cutting measures imposed by racing regulators.

"Formula One teams used to send as many employees as they wanted to every race around the world. But regulations now limit the number of technical and other crew that they can bring to the races," the article said.

To keep on-site crews in touch with the rest of the team, AT&T, for example, has implemented a robust telecommunications infrastructure for its sponsored team to allow for fast information exchange in the midst of races.

Teams can download hundreds of gigabytes of data during races, the article says, as the cars are fitted with numerous sensors that monitor temperature, pressure, speed, wheel position, etc. The real-time data allows technicians at both the garage and at the factory to quickly make adjustments.

3. PeakColo connects into Zayo's dark fiber network to enhance its cloud service suite

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

PeakColo, a Denver, Co.-based provider of cloud-based services, has signed a deal with Zayo for dark fiber connectivity.

Serving as the core connectivity in its Western-area network, PeakColo will be able to leverage Zayo's dark fiber to enhance the speed and performance of its cloud services to customers in their Colorado and Arizona data centers.

Zayo, which late last year launched its own dark fiber business, is enabling competitive service providers like PeakColo offering cloud that are in need of alternative solutions that may not be readily available from a local incumbent such as CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL).

PeakColo is an example of that growth. Luke Norris, president and CEO of PeakColo, said that "PeakColo has experienced 300 percent year-over-year growth and, as a result, we had an immediate need for reliable network services that could be deployed quickly."

Such growth in the cloud, even for smaller service providers, shouldn't be all that surprising as more businesses look to offload non-essential functions like e-mail and storage to cloud providers like PeakColo. According to a recent CDW study, over 37 percent of large businesses have already adopted cloud-based services.

4. France Telecom to shut down the Minitel in 2012

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | < a href="http://links.mkt1985.com/ctt?kn=39&ms=MzU2MjA4OAS2&r=MjM2NzI3MjAzMjcS1&b=0&j=MTEyMTk3ODczS0&mt=1&rt=0" name="api_addthis_com_oexchange_MPd9uH7hkAqgTgKf3MTBQ" >Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

France Telecom (NYSE: FTE) is going to pull the plug on Minitel, France's own early version of the Internet, next June.

Even though Minitel is a very slow text-only service, since it debuted in 1982 it has remained popular with banks and weather forecasters, generating $43.1 million in revenue in 2010.

A France Télécom spokeswoman said in a Wall Street Journal article on Friday that "The Minitel will die on June 30, 2012" because the architecture it's based on is obsolete.

The Minitel was the product of a late-1970s government-led initiative to get people to exchange information and conduct daily activities such as checking banking accounts to reduce their dependency on paper. At its peak in 2002, there were about nine million Minitel systems in France's homes.

However, opinions about the Minitel were always divided.

Critics have long argued that Minitel, which became a €1 billion cash cow for France Telecom in the late 1990s, may have actually hampered the telco's move to roll out broadband services. Minitel supports argue the service gave all residents, including those living in rural areas, a way to quickly get information.

5. University of Wisconsin's broadband project clears legal challenge

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

It looks like the University of Wisconsin's dream to become an alternative broadband source has dodged a bullet as a Dane County judge denied Access Wisconsin's move to block the project from moving forward.

A consortium led by the University of Wisconsin won $37 million in broadband stimulus grants that was centered on providing telecom to public institutions (schools, hospitals and first responders).

Upon completion, the project would bring services to Eau Claire, Chippewa, Douglas, Dunn, Grant, Marathon and Menominee counties.

Access Wisconsin, one of the managing partners of the BCN, the BadgerNet Converged Network that's run in partnership with large telcos including AT&T (NYSE: T), CenturyTel (NYSE: CTL), KDL and Verizon (NYSE: VZ), argued that the project violates state law because it will compete with privately run companies. The group wanted a judge to order a temporary restraining order to prevent the project from moving forward.

Service providers: Raise your glasses to MEF's 10th anniversary!

By Nan Chen Comment | Fo rward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Nan Chen, Metro Ethernet Forum

The year 2011 marks the tenth anniversary of the MEF, and what a whirlwind decade it has been for global business and telecommunications. Ten years of economic ups and downs, of soaring bandwidth demands, increasing competition and downward price pressures--but through it all, Carrier Ethernet services and equipment sales continue to forge ahead.

For service providers, in particular, this has been more than just a piece of good news in a drab economic outlook--because the growth in Carrier Ethernet promises a much-needed tonic for the telecom industry and significant new opportunities. The benefits offered by a vigorous market in Carrier Ethernet services can accelerate the whole of global business.

Driven largely by the 180+ members of the MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum), and the technical standards and implementation agreements it has developed over the past 10 years, Carrier Ethernet services are now a $20 billion market and is set to grow to between $40-$50 billion by 2014--according to industry analysts like Infonetics and Ovum. ...Continue reading this Industry Voices article online

lightRadio™ Modernizes the RAN for a Service-Rich Environment

Mobile operators will never be able to keep up with consumer demands for more capacity and better performing services unless they modernize their networks. The radio access network, which still cobbles together antennas, amplifiers, processors and other components according to a complicated architecture that was established decades ago, is a glaring example of the need for 21st century solutions.

The need for more efficient and better performing RAN has stimulated innovation in the vendor community, which is responding with new architectures that can make the cell site equipment smaller and simpler while increasing capacity and lowering costs.

"The trend in industry toward smaller form factors is very important because the challenges of siting base stations are only getting greater," said Ken Rehbehn, principal analyst at Yankee Group Research.

"Architectures that allow for a reduction in form factor are important for making it possible to give consumers the high-speed mobile broadband experience at the quality level the consumers expect."... Click here to read more.

1. RIM slashes 2,000 jobs, says COO to retire

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) said it will cut around 2,000 jobs, or 11 percent of its global workforce, as part of a restructuring the BlackBerry maker forecast last month. The company also made changes to its management team, and said COO Don Morrison will retire.

The company said in a statement that the jobs cuts, which RIM first disclosed in its most recent quarterly earnings announcement, are "a prudent and necessary step for the long term success of the company and it follows an extended period of rapid growth within the company whereby the workforce had nearly quadrupled in the last five years alone." Until now, the company had not disclosed how many jobs it would cut.

After the cuts, RIM's global workforce will be around 17,000 people. The company said the job cuts will affect all functions of the company and that the financial impact of the cuts will be disclosed when RIM reports its next quarterly earnings on Sept. 15.

The cuts come after RIM reported weak quarterly financials and BlackBerry device shipments. RIM has been steadily losing market share, particularly in the United States, to smartphones running Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, though it recently has made gains in Europe and elsewhere.

In addition to the job cuts, RIM said Morrison, who has been on medical leave since June, will retire after more than 10 years with the company. As part of a broader management shakeup, RIM said Thorsten Heins will take on the expanded role of COO for products and sales. The company said all product engineering functions, including both hardware and software teams, are being consolidated under his direction. Additionally, RIM said Jim Rowan will take on the expanded role of COO of operations, and will continue to be responsible for manufacturing, global supply chain and repair services.

2. Analyst: Samsung may claim top smartphone spot in Q2

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Samsung may have surpassed both Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Nokia (NYSE:NOK) in the second quarter to become the world's largest smartphone maker in terms of unit shipments, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.

The forecast, which echoes earlier predictions for the second quarter, would be a milestone for Samsung. According to Strategy Analytics, Samsung shipped between 18 million and 21 million smartphones globally in the second quarter, compared with 16.7 million for Nokia and 20.3 million iPhones for Apple, which was a record.

Other analysts, including those at Nomura, have predicted Samsung will at least surpass Nokia. Apple passed Nokia in terms of smartphone shipments for the first time in the second quarter. Samsung soared to prominence largely on the back of smartphones running Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android platform. Samsung also sells smartphones running Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 7 and its own bada OS.

"Samsung's Android portfolio is selling strongly in most regions," Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston told Bloomberg. "Samsung stands a reasonable chance of capturing the top spot on a quarterly basis if it can continue expanding its Android portfolio across high-growth markets like China and Brazil. Samsung and Apple will be at similar levels in smartphones by the end of the year."

Samsung's shipments were likely helped by strong sales of its new hit model, the Galaxy S II. The company said earlier this month it shipped 3 million devices in 55 days. Samsung expects to ship 60 million smartphones this year and 300 million handsets in total.

3. AT&T customers look to block T-Mobile USA deal

By Lynnette Luna Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Lawyers representing 11 AT&T (NYSE:T) customers have file arbitration cases designed to block the company's planned $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA.

The firm Bursor & Fisher filed a 236-page arbitration demand last week, claiming that the deal is in violation of the Clayton Antitrust Act and hurts competition. While the deal requires the necessary government approvals from the Department of Justice and the FCC, the action is designed to represent customers who want to legally challenge the acquisition.

"Government enforcement is an important part of the antitrust laws, but the Clayton Act also permits private parties who may be adversely affected to challenge a proposed merger," attorney Scott Bursor said in a statement printed by AllThingsD. "That means any AT&T cell phone, data or iPad customer who will suffer higher prices and diminished service because of this merger can sue to stop it from happening."

The firm aims to file hundreds more arbitration cases and has set up a web site explaining its case. The complaints have to be filed as arbitration because AT&T's standard contract terms prohibit class-action suits but do allow for arbitration disputes.

"If we bring 100 cases and we lose 99 of them we are going to win," Bursor said. "We just need one arbitrator to say, ‘Wait a minute, this merger is going to hurt competition.'"

4. Qualcomm snaps up GestureTek assets for gesture recognition in smartphones

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) purchased certain assets from GestureTek, which makes gesture recognition technology, and plans to use the technology for chips that will go into smartphones, tablets and other devices.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Qualcomm said it purchased "certain intellectual property assets related to gesture recognition, as well as key engineering resources" from Sunnyvale, Calif.-based GestureTek. Qualcomm said it plans to incorporate gesture recognition technology into its current and next-generation Snapdragon processors for smartphones tablets and home entertainment devices. GestureTek will retain other assets for its gesture-controlled public display and digital signage business.

GestureTek was founded in 1986 and is heavily involved in displays for kiosks, the healthcare industry as well as consumer electronics. According to a GestureTek company fact sheet, since 2003 the company's sales have increased an average of 50 percent per year and employee growth has average 30 percent per year.

GestureTek video gesture control technology lets users control user interface and access information by waving their hands in front of a display. The acquisition highlights the changing nature of user input for mobile devices, which has expanded in recent years to include not only touchscreens but also voice recognition.

5. AT&T to bring Gingerbread to all postpaid Android phones this year

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) said that it will update all of its postpaid smartphones introduced this year running Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android platform to Android 2.3, or Gingerbread, the latest version of the operating system currently available for smartphones.

AT&T said that starting today, and continuing over the next few weeks, Motorola Mobility (NYSE:MMI) Atrix users will be prompted to install the update, but must be connected to a Wi-Fi network. In August, AT&T said HTC Inspire users will get the update but will also have to download it over Wi-Fi.  The carrier noted that delivery methods for the software update will vary by device, but said whenever possible, upgrades will delivered via over-the-air software updates, although some customers may have to connect to a Wi-Fi network or connect their device to a  PC to get the update.

The full list of AT&T devices that will get the software upgrade include the HTC Inspire, LG Phoenix, Motorola Atrix, Pantech Crossover, Samsung Captivate and Samsung Infuse. Gingerbread, which first became available in December 2010 in the Nexus S, includes user interface refinements, refined copy/paste functionality, a new on-screen keyboard, better power management and speed enhancements.

Android users have often complained of the slow pace of software updates for older models, and the new upgrade schedule from AT&T could be a reflection of the growing importance of Android customers to its smartphone ambitions. AT&T said last week that Android, Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 7 and Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry accounted for 40 percent of its smartphone sales. The carrier, which also sells Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone, sa id 50 percent of the company's postpaid subscriber base are now smartphone users.
