Radio Controlled Hobbies: A Technological History

You push a lever on your remote, and your remote control plane veers to the left. It almost seems like magic. Radio control is one of the most magical inventions of the modern era. It has a very long and intriguing history.

Linguistic research into the origins of the word radio reveals that it was from the prefix “radio-“meaning concerned with radiations. The word radio came into being before Hertz’s discovering of electromagnetic radiations. Initially what was radio-telegraphy and radio-telephony over time came to be just radio. One of the first people to popularize the term was another pioneer in America in the field of wireless transmission: Dee Forest.

Tesla demonstrated wireless telegraphy in 1893 almost eight years after the discovery of the electromagnetic waves by Hertz. Jagdish Chandra Bose in 1894 used electromagnetic waves to ignite gun powder and strike a gong in Calcutta (Now Kolkatta) in India. That possibly was the dawn of wireless/radio communications and its applications in science. Tesla in 1896 transmitted wireless signals for nearly 30 miles distance and patented his first four tuned circuit wireless system as being the first practical wireless transmission equipment. Marconi in 1899 spanned the English channel with this wireless transmission.

The dawn of the new century also was the beginning of a new era when Marconi performed the first trans-Atlantic radio signal in 12th December, 1901. The crystal sets which were patented by J.C. Bose came to be commonly used for detecting and receiving radio signals. There have been numerous disputes over who exactly was the first to conceive the idea or wireless transmission, Tesla or Marconi. In between somewhere there is one Popov who was also a pioneer in this field! Tesla is said to have run into financial troubles that greatly limited his run in the race. But nevertheless, Tesla seems to have been the first, but the controversy over this is not our concern now. Whoever it was, the truth stands is that it was one of the finest inventions in the history of science.

The first decade of the century saw many entrepreneurs and experimenters working with wireless radio but it was about at the near end of the first decade that definite hobby interests sparked. Radio signals were originally produced by spark transmitters, which were noisy and inefficient. Then the alternator-transmitter and then the arc-transmitter came into being.

The invention of vacuum-tude diodes and triodes revolutionized the radio transmission and receivers. The invention of triode amplifier generators made audio possible and started a new era of “audio radio”. The vacuum tubes were the staple component for a long time until the invention of the transistor which made the equipment more precise, concise and efficiently mobile!

Then, AT&T used the vacuum tubes to transmit voices over phone lines and this lead to the experimenting of speeches over long distances for audience to hear over loudspeakers. Commercialization was thought about from the initial days but there was no way to restrict the transmission to specific paid users and broadcasting remained commercial-free. Then AT&T started the idea of advertising to finance the programming, and it is here to stay until this very date. There have been constant innovations in the field of radio broadcasting with the latest craze being internet radio. So, radio is NEVER out of date but it is forever coming in new forms.

Highlighting today's women telecom leaders

By Samantha Bookman Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Samantha Bookman, FierceTelecomIn this day and age, where women make up a larger percentage of the workforce than ever before, some might find it odd to celebrate women in leadership positions. But the workforce statistics don't point out a still-glaring fact that in the telecommunications vertical--in any high-tech industry, really--women are still few and far between, particularly in leadership roles.

That statistic is changing, but perhaps not fast enough. And for young women still in school, the example set by women leaders can be a compelling and even critical component of their decision about which career field to pursue.

Those are two key reasons why FierceTelecom's second annual Women in Wireline special feature is important and relevant. Highlighting the achievements of these executives can help point the way forward for others looking to grow in a field that was historically male-dominated.

Many of our selectees are veterans of the telecommunications industry: Maura Mahoney held positions at Bell Atlantic and NYNEX (now Verizon) and other telecom-oriented companies before joining Sidera as Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

Jean McManus of Verizon and Erica Johnson of the University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL) lead technical teams in development of advanced communications technologies.

Executives like Karlyn Oberg of SureWest (Nasdaq: SURW) and Olivia Garfield of BT Openreach are driving network-building initiatives with the goal of improving broadband access to millions of consumers.

I hope you'll take a few minutes today to check out our 2011 Women in Wireline feature and the leaders we profile within. As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions.--Sam

Today's Top Stories

1. NTELOS names wireline, FiberNet units "Lumos Networks"

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

NTELOS (Nasdaq: NTLS) is giving the telecom industry a sneak peek at how its wireline business, which will combine the current NTELOS Wireline and FiberNet units, by announcing that the new publicly traded company will be called "Lumos Networks."

A product of NTELOS' previous decision last December to separate its wireless and wireline operations, Lumos Networks will hold brand launch events in four of its key markets: Charleston, West Va., and Waynesboro, Covington, and Daleville, Va.

Meanwhile, NTELOS Wireless will retain the NTELOS name, providing nationwide wireless service.

Michael B. Moneymaker, President and CFO of Lumos Networks Corp., said that the name change will help create brand identity for the wireline side of the business, something that can be challenging when two powerful segments have to compete for capital and people resources.

"The change to Lumos Networks will allow us to create a stronger identity for our wireline business--data, broadband, voice, and IP services," he said.

NTELOS isn't alone in its desire to create separate identities for its wireline and wireless holdings. The ILEC actually joins other service providers like Sprint (NYSE: S), which spun out its former wireline operations as Embarq, now part of CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL), and the former Alltell spinning out its wireline assets to create Windstream (Nasdaq: WIN).

When the transition is complete, Lumos Networks will be listed on the Nasdaq, trading under the symbol "LMOS."

2. tw telecom enterprise service growth drives Q2 revenue to $338.4M

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

tw telecom (Nasdaq: TWTC) saw the benefits of its business-centric services focus in Q2 2011 take shape as the service provider reported that revenue grew 1.8 percent to $338.4 million.

On a year-over-year basis, revenue was up 6.8 percent, up from the $316.8 million reported in Q2 2010, representing a year-over-year increase of $21.6 million.

As has been the case in previous quarters, the growth drivers in tw telecom's earnings mix continue to be derived from enterprise, data and Ethernet and VPN-based products. Data and Internet services represent 47 percent of revenue for the quarter versus 42 percent in the same quarter last year.

During the Q2 2011, tw telecom's enterprise revenue grew 2.2 sequentially and 8.3 percent year-over-year. Likewise, data and Internet revenue grew 3.9 percent sequentially and 17.9 percent year-over-year, a factor that was driven by a 29 percent year-over-year increase in Ethernet and VPN-based products.

Larissa Herda, tw telecom's Chairman, CEO and President, said that "Our success was driven by our strategic data and Internet portfolio, including the new product initiatives we launched last year."

Ongoing demand for enterprise services drove tw telecom to increase its fiber-connected building additions nearly 60 percent.

Outside of enterprise sales, tw telecom reported a $2.6 million increase in wholesale services, which it attributes to more wireless backhaul services to wireless operators and more Ethernet services to other service providers to serve their end-customer base.

Of course, there were some obvious losses.

tw telecom's net income was $14.3 million for the quarter, down from the  $242.3 million in Q2 2010. The service provider's net income was impacted by a $227.3 million non-cash income tax benefit in 2010.

Network services, for one, declined 1.2 percent, a factor that tw telecom says reflects growth in other services, including colocation. Voice services remained nearly flat with 0.7 percent growth, reflecting churn and a reduction in usage-based services.

Ongoing demand for its enterprise and wholesale network services, tw telecom decided to raise its 2011 annual capital investment guidance to $340 to $350 million. The increase in capital spending will be used to drive more success-based investments to connect new customer locations, expand colocation facilities and extend the reach of its fiber network.

3. Verizon adds mobile satellite to Private IP to fill in service gaps

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) may have one of the largest global IP-based networks, but even they have areas where they just can't reach or are too expensive to deploy--so they are complementing their Private IP Service suite with mobile satellite solutions.

Verizon Private IP satellite network

Verizon Private IP satellite network availability (Source: Verizon SLA)

Since the satellite services leverage Verizon's MPLS private IP network, Private IP customers will be able access their respective private networks from any area where Verizon has satellite service coverage.

Customers can use the Mobile Satellite Solution to support an array of services, including primary access, business continuity, digital signage, IPTV or content delivery.

Depending on the specific configuration, Verizon can get its Mobile Satellite Solutions up and running in the U.S. within 24-36 hours.

While Verizon's drive to integrate its Mobile Satellite Service as part of the Private IP Service suite may be new, the service provider has been delivering satellite services for over 20 years to business and government customers. In recent years, Verizon's Mobile Satellite Service has been used during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the Sept. 11 World Trade Center attacks, and the Oklahoma City bombing, in addition to large floods and wildfires.

4. Telus' Q2 wireline revenue increase shows continued gains in video, broadband data

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Telus' (Toronto: T.TO) ongoing moves to expand its wireless and wireline service portfolios helped drive Q2 2011 revenue up 6.4 percent to CAD 2.55 billion (USD 2.56 billion).

The revenue increase was the result of about a 10 percent in wireless revenue and 3 percent growth wireline growth. Both the wireless and wireline divisions reported that they saw continued growth in delivering broadband data services to customers.

Driven by growth in data and equipment revenues that were partially offset by expected declines in local and long-distance voice revenues, Telus' external wireline revenues were up 3.1 percent or CAD 37 million (USD 37.2 million).

Darren Entwistle, TELUS President and CEO in the Q2 2011 earnings release, said that the wireline unit's "growth is supported by solid TELUS TV and high speed Internet customer additions of 59,000 on a combined basis, up 84 percent year over year," adding that "TELUS' TV client base surpassed 400,000 customers this quarter while our voice business yielded the lowest level of consumer line losses in five years."

Here's a breakout of Telus' key wireline metrics:

  • Wireline Voice Losses: While Telus did see expected 4.2 percent network access line (NAL) loss to 3.68 million due to cable competition and wireless substitution, residential NAL losses of 31,000 improved by 20,000 year over year, a factor it attributes to bundling voice with its Optik broadband data and voice services. On the business side, NALs increased by 7,000 due to increases in wholesale lines.
  • Broadband and Data: In the wireline side of Telus, broadband was a key growth engine. During the quarter, Telus added 13,000 new Optik broadband subscribers due to what Telus said was a "pull through effect of Optik TV sales" in addition to ongoing broadband service expansion. At the same time, growth in Internet and enhanced data services and TV sales drove up total data service and equipment revenues were up 14 percent, or CAD 78 million (USD 78.5 million).
  • Video Growth: Telus' bet on IPTV continues to pay off as the service provider signed up 46,000 new Optik TV subscribers in the second quarter, representing a 59 percent increase over the same quarter last year. As of the end of the quarter, Telus had 403,000 Opitk TV subscribers, a 77 percent increase over Q2 2010.

Given the Q2 growth Telus reported in its wireless and wireline units, the service provider has decided to revise its original consolidated revenue outlook for 2011 to CAD200 million (USD 201.3 million) to CAD 300 million (USD 301.9 million).

5. MTS Allstream's Q2 earnings improve, driving increase in 2011 revenue guidance

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

MTS Allstream's (Toronto: MBT.TO) Q2 earnings reflect the ongoing challenge of balancing out new growth in broadband and converged IP services with legacy service declines.

While MTS Allstream's revenue grew to CAD 443.7 million (USD 447.4 million), up slightly from the CAD 439 million (USD 442.7 million) it reported in Q1 2011, the big area of growth was seen in earnings per share, which rose 40.7 percent to 76 cents, and net income, which rose 41.5 percent to CAD 49.8 million (USD 50.2 million).

Pierre Blouin, CEO of MTS Allstream said in the financial release that "Our past investments and strong focus on IP technology nationally and on unique bundles of home services in Manitoba contributed to another quarter of solid financial results for both MTS and Allstream."

Looking at it from the division perspective, the growth of MTS and Allstream was driven by new consumer broadband and converged IP-based business services.

MTS' continued bets to expand its wireless, broadband, and IPTV service initiatives, all of which all rose collectively by 9.6 percent year over year, paid off in Q2 as MTS reported that revenue rose 2.9 percent from CAD 232.8 million (USD 234.8 million) to CAD 239.5 million (USD 241.5 million).

Allstream, however, again saw its share of IP-based service growing pains. Although continued to connect more buildings to its IP and fiber network, Allstream's overall revenue declined by CAD 5.9 million (USD 5.95 million), or 2.8 percent, to CAD 204.2 million (USD 205.9 million) from CAD 210.1 million (USD 211.9 million) due to declines in legacy voice and data revenues.

However, Allstream's legacy losses were slightly offset by a 10.6 percent increase in converged IP revenues that are supported by success-based investments that are adding more new fiber-fed buildings to its network. In Q2 2011 alone, Allstream lit an additional 47 buildings on its network, bringing it to a total of 2,211 buildings as of the end of June.

In addition to EPS, the success of both the MTS and Allstream divisions drove EBITDA growth. Overall EBITDA growth for the quarter was 8.6 percent year-over-year.

Due to the Q2 results, MTS Allstream decided to raise its 2011 revenue outlook from CAD 1.7 billion (USD 1.71 billion) to CAD 1.78 billion (USD 1.8 billion).

TODAY'S SPOTLIGHT... PAETEC brings 200 Mbps EoC to social networking company

PAETEC's (Nasdaq: PAET) Intellifiber subsidiary may have turned some heads in the Ethernet services department when it rang up its 100 Mbps capable Ethernet over Copper (EoC) service, but now it's delivering a 200 Mbps EoC service to an unnamed social media company.

Leveraging EoC gear that Overture Networks acquired when it purchased the former Hatteras Networks, the new 200 Mbps service will be used to connect its data center to the Internet.

To achieve the 200 Mbps speeds, Overture has incorporated higher rate adaptive span profiles in their EoC products that they say can support up to 15 Mbps per copper pair. By introducing these new adaptive profiles, Overture said that they can reduce the turnup time for 200 Mbps EoC services.

The new deployment is centered on flexibility in that the social media company can provision new Ethernet speeds as needed.

Clint Heiden, president of national accounts and fiber services, PAETEC, said that the "interesting thing is that the customer also uses us for 300 Mbps fixed wireless."

Heiden added that this deployment is "is a demonstration of our ability to provide solutions independent of fiber, copper, and fixed wireless, and rather than providing an access method we're starting to push the envelope on being able to provide alternative access solutions that meet the needs of customers."

"I think we're completely open to the notion of Windows as a platform," Jha said in an appearance at the Oppenheimer Technology & Communications Conference. "Clearly, all of our focus today is on Android."
The Motorola chief said the company will evaluate Windows Phone to see if it becomes a viable ecosystem. However, he said that beyond Android and Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, it's not clear which smartphone platforms will survive in the long term. He said he does not think all three competing ecosystems--Windows Phone, Hewlett-Packard's webOS and Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry--can survive.
In a wide-ranging discussion of Motorola' standing in the handset market and its priorities, Jha touched upon Motorola's patent portfolio, its global expansion and how it will differentiate itself. One of the factors that will set Android handset makers apart, he said, is the strength of their intellectual property. HTC, Samsung and Motorola are each engaged in separate patent disputes with Apple.
"We have a very large IP portfolio," he said. "And I think in the long term as things settle down, you will see meaningful difference in positions in Android players both in terms of avoidance of royalties and the ability to collect royalties."
Jha also said that Motorola will differentiate its devices in the second half of the year through enhanced enterprise and multimedia capabilities as well as through wider distribution. He said Motorola will have more global devices launches in the second half--the Droid Bionic LTE smartphone for Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) will not be the only key device from the company. Jha added that beyond solidifying its position in the U.S., Motorola wants to expand aggressively into Europe, especially into Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom.

The FCC said it will consider AT&T's (NYSE:T) proposed $1.93 billion purchase of Qualcomm's (NASDAQ:QCOM) 700 MHz MediaFLO spectrum side-by-side with AT&T's planned $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA.
While the FCC is not formally combining the reviews of the two acquisitions, the move is a setback for AT&T and Qualcomm, which have argued that the two deals should be evaluated independent of one another. "The commission's ongoing review has confirmed that the proposed transactions raise a number of related issues, including, but not limited to, questions regarding AT&T's aggregation of spectrum throughout the nation, particularly in overlapping areas," the commission said in a letter signed by Wireless Telecommunications Bureau Chief Rick Kaplan.
The FCC said it will halt its informal 180-day "shot-clock" on the AT&T/Qualcomm deal and consider the deals in a "coordinated manner." The action leaves open the possibility that the FCC would review them independently later on.
The move is a win for the likes of Cincinnati Bell Wireless, MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS), Ntelos, Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S), the Rural Cellular Association and the Rural Telecommunications Group, which earlier this spring asked the FCC to combine the proceedings.
"We believe the Qualcomm transaction stands on its own merits," an AT&T spokesman told FierceWireless. "We are pleased that the commission has rejected calls to officially consolidate the two deals and has expressly preserved the ability for the Qualcomm application to be resolved in advance of the T-Mobile application. We remain confident that the FCC will approve the license transfers as consistent with the public interest."
Similarly, in a statement, Dean Brenner, Qualcomm's vice president of government affairs, said that the deal should be approved "because of the clear benefits to the public from the sale that stand on their own and are totally unrelated to the proposed AT&T-T-Mobile merger." He cited the re-purposing of unused 700 MHz unpaired spectrum for mobile broadband as well as the fact that the deal will allow Qualcomm to invest in a new, spectrally efficient technology, supplemental downlink.

Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR) CTO John Saw said that when the company does deploy "LTE-Advanced-ready" network technology, it will be able to tap into the benefits of LTE-Advanced, a standard that was just finalized earlier this year and is still not ready for primetime in terms of devices. However, in an interview with Connected Planet, Saw said the technology will enable Clearwire to deploy multiple 20 MHz carriers on contiguous spectrum using carrier-aggregation technology, thus giving the company fatter pipes and more network capacity.
In the interview, Saw also explained that Clearwire chose to deploy TDD-LTE rather than the more common FDD variant used by Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) because it will give Clearwire greater flexibility. TDD uses the same spectrum for uplink and downlink connections, which will enable Clearwire to dynamically allocate more capacity depending on the constraints being put on the network. Clearwire's current WiMAX network uses TDD technology.
However, before Clearwire can begin deploying LTE, it must receive new funding. Clearwire said it will need at least $600 million in additional capital to deploy LTE--and the company's current financial picture is not rosy.
Standard & Poor's said Clearwire will run out of cash in 2012, and revised its outlook on Clearwire's debt to negative. Meanwhile, the yields on Clearwire's bonds are approaching levels consistent with an impending default. "We have sufficient liquidity to fund our current WiMAX operations for at least the next 12 months," Clearwire spokeswoman Susan Johnston told Bloomberg. "We expect our operations to begin generating positive EBITDA in Q1 of 2012."
Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) reduced its voting stake in Clearwire in June to below 50 percent in a bid to protect its balance sheet and clear the air with investors over potentially being held liable should Clearwire default on its debt obligations. Sprint reduced its voting rights in Clearwire from around 54 percent to 49.8 percent, but maintained its 54 percent economic stake in Clearwire.
S&P said it is not confident in Clearwire's funding future. "Moreover, we believe that even if Sprint Nextel were to provide additional funding for Clearwire, or if Clearwire were to raise capital by selling spectrum assets, the rating would likely remain in the 'CCC' category until Clearwire obtained greater self-sufficiency," S&P credit analyst Allyn Arden said in a statement.

ZTE said it shipped 35 million handsets in the first half of the year, up 30 percent from the first half of 2010, giving the company solid momentum toward its goal of shipping 80 million total handsets for the year.

The company said the 35 million units are part of the 60 million "terminals" it shipped in the first half; ZTE's terminal shipments also include items such as USB modems. ZTE attributed the jump in overall shipments to a 400 percent rise in its smartphone sales in the first half. The Chinese vendor also said that U.S. market shipments surged 300 percent in the first half.
In the United States, ZTE has been steadily making inroads with Tier 2 and smaller U.S. carriers, but has yet to get a Tier 1 carrier to promote one of its smartphones.
ZTE said earlier this year it expects its global smartphone shipments to quadruple from 3 million units to 12 million. Although the company has been relying on Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android platform to power its smartphone growth, ZTE will release devices running Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 7 in Europe later this year. The company expects to bring Windows Phone devices to the United States early next year.
According to both IDC and Strategy Analytics, ZTE captured the No. 5 global handset maker spot in the second quarter, behind Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), and grew both its unit shipments and market share. Research firm ABI Research said ZTE was the sixth-largest branded handset maker in the second quarter.

The U.S. International Trade Commission will investigate another patent complaint brought by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) against HTC, intensifying the legal battle between the two smartphone makers.
The ITC said it will look into Apple's accusations that HTC infringed on five patents related to software architecture and user interfaces in portable electronic devices, hardware for touch screens and movement sensors. Apple is seeking to block the importation of HTC's Android smartphones as well as its Flyer tablet.
"HTC respects intellectual property and will continue to protect and defend its protected innovations," Grace Lei, HTC's general counsel, said in a statement provided to news outlets. "We will fully cooperate with the ITC's investigation and look forward to showing that we are not in violation of any of Apple's patents."
In July, a judge at the ITC found that HTC infringed on two Apple patents. HTC has said it will appeal the ruling to the full, six-member ITC, and a decision is not expected until late this year. However, HTC CFO Winston Young has also said the company is willing to negotiate a settlement of some kind with Apple.
